Travellers |
|
| |
LAW SOLUTIONS runs one of the largest specialised legal temporary teams in Australia and we employ many overseas travellers. Most of our temporary assignments are with leading law firms in Melbourne, but occasionally we require workers for other areas of Australia. Travellers are usually restricted to working six months in any one assignment.
To work with us, travellers will need either a law degree OR extensive experience in a legal office. You will also need a valid working holiday visa and an Australian tax file number. Once you have the visa, please email us advising your approximate date of arrival and intended length of stay in Melbourne and/or other states. We will then advise you of the type of work we should have available for you. |

Working visas |
|
| |
To be legally able to work in Australia, you must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident or have a valid work permit. Australia also allows young citizens of many countries to apply for a 12-month working holiday visa. Before you leave home, you need to apply for the visa through the Australian Consulate or embassy in your country of origin.
Once you have this visa, you will be able to do any kind of temporary or casual work, for periods of up to six months. This is because the main purpose of your visit is supposed to be to holiday and travel. However, as we often have work available around Australia, you should be able to work for us for the entirety of your stay, provided each assignment does not exceed six months.
We will need to sight your visa prior to placing you in any assignments. For more information in relation to visas contact the Australia Department of Immigration at www.immigration.gov.au. |

Tax file numbers |
|
| |
Every person working in Australia must have a tax file number, otherwise earnings will be taxed at approximately 50%! To work in Australia, it is best to apply for a tax file number and open an Australian bank account immediately upon arrival.
You can apply in person from:
| |
The Australian Taxation Office |
| |
Casseldon Place, 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne |
A tax file number will be valid for the traveller's whole stay in Australia, regardless of what states or territories they work in. The number takes about six weeks to come through (although work can start as soon as it has been applied for). Before leaving Australia, a tax return should be lodged - either by collecting a tax pack available at any Australia Post Office or by contacting a tax accountant who can do it on the traveller's behalf.

Leaving Australia |
|
| |
Before you leave Australian, you need to update contact details with the tax department, relevant bank and superannuation fund, and of course with us. This will ensure that no important correspondence is missed and that all payments or refunds are received.
Because we know travellers (and residents) want to find out what there is to do in the city, we have compiled an information brochure to aid in the search for exciting things to do, either during the day or after hours. Simply click on either of the links below and start to explore! |
